Julia Lovell (Fellow of British Academy) is professor of modern Chinese history and literature at Birkbeck, University of London. She has translated many works of Chinese fiction into English, including for Penguin Classics Monkey King: Journey to the West and The Real Story of Ah Q and Other Tales of China: The Complete Fiction of Lu Xun. She co-designed the 2023 British Museum exhibition ‘China’s Hidden Century’ 晚清百态.
内容概要：
This lecture will focus on Professor Lovell’s recent work co-designing the 2023 British Museum exhibition on late Qing history, 晚清百态. It will analyse the aims and focuses of the exhibition: the challenges of presenting a very complex and controversial period of Chinese history to diverse audiences, from both the West and from China. In particular, it will discuss how the exhibition chose its themes, and how it tried to combine understandings of history from both documentary and material culture. It will focus on how the exhibition strove to balance the big histories of politics, war and imperial aggression towards China, with the stories of resilient individuals who lived through this turbulent period of Chinese history. It will explain the complex negotiations that such an exhibition involves between different departments of the British Museum, to illuminate museum culture in Britain, and the impact of the pandemic on the project. Finally, it will discuss responses to the exhibition in China and in Anglophone countries, and continuities and change in historical understandings of the late Qing period.
